A ham radio repeater is a device used in amateur radio to extend the range of communication between radio operators. When an amateur radio operator transmits a signal to a repeater, the repeater receiver picks up the transmission and retransmits it on a separate frequency. Other operators within range of the repeater can then receive the signal using their handheld or mobile radios, allowing communication over a much larger area than would be possible with a direct point-to-point transmission.

Repeater systems are strategically located to provide optimal coverage and fill in gaps where direct communication might be challenging due to terrain or distance. They are commonly used in areas such as mountainous regions, cities with tall buildings, or rural locations with limited line-of-sight communication.
